House Democrats attacked Supreme Court justices who overturned federal abortion protections as “corrupt” and “extremist” at a press conference marking a year since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health ruling.

“First of all, why we’re here today — because we know last June that a handful of corrupt, extremist, hypocritical judges argued that the issue of abortion should be left for the states to decide,” said Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., running for Senate. “If the GOP thought it was important to let people make their own decisions about abortion, they wouldn’t have banned the option for half the country.”

The court’s conservative majority voted 5 to 4 last June to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case, while voting 6 to 3 to uphold Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban in Dobbs.

“Brown v Board of Education is in the Supreme Court. Hall of Fame. The Dobbs decision is in the Supreme Court Hall of Shame,” Jeffries said, referring to the case decided in 1954 that led to desegregation in schools . “Because unlike other enlightened decisions the Supreme Court has made over the years that have expanded freedom, the Dobbs decision limited and limited and undermined freedom for women across America.”

Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., who helped lead Democrats’ efforts to codify abortion protections into law with the Women’s Health Protection Act, tarnished the reputation of the court, which has drawn more attention in the past year given as it is regarded as various hot button issues.

“Far-right politicians and judges, and now the MAGA movement, want to make this country a country of forced birth. They have conquered the Supreme Court, which is facing a legitimacy crisis the likes of which we have never experienced in our lives,” Chu said.

In the wake of the June 2022 ruling, Democrats have pinned abortion as a core issue of the campaign. Less than six months later, in the midterm elections, they defied expectations by retaining the Senate and clashing what was expected to be a “red wave” in the House of Representatives.

It has also turned the apolitical Supreme Court into a political lightning rod, renewing calls from the left to expand the bench in a bid to even out the current conservative supermajority.

Currently, there are 17 states plus Washington, DC, that have laws protecting abortion. Limits or bans exist in 24 states.
