An Alaska Airlines passenger was detained and sedated after a fight with flight attendants.
An attendant said the man was caught just before entering the cockpit.
The man claims that he did not overdose, but had a panic attack.
A man on an Alaska Airlines flight had to be detained and sedated after he tried to fight with several crew members, according to a affidavit filed in the United States District Court for the District of Alaska.
According to the affidavit filed Monday, the man was heard screaming in the bathroom. When approached by an attendant who tried to help, he slammed open the door and began to walk towards the cockpit with “drool and foam coming out of his mouth.”
The flight attendant told prosecutors he blocked the man from continuing to fly and asked a medical expert on board for assistance. A nurse who came forward suggested giving the man Narcan – a drug used to treat drug overdose – but only administered at a low dose. This is when witnesses say the man began to resist, trying to “punch and push and grab onto people,” the affidavit said.
After being handcuffed and given sedative medication, the man told passengers he was having a panic attack, not an overdose. Witnesses said that after the plane landed, the man tried to hide a piece of foil with a “white powdery substance” between the seats, but was caught.
In an interview with the police, the man says yes experience dizziness and took three HHC sticky bears fleeing, which he says may have contributed to his reaction. However, he couldn’t explain why he had the foil, and at one point “appeared to tear up” when asked for an explanation.
The man faces charges for simple assault within maritime and territorial jurisdiction, interference with flight crew members and crew, and application of certain criminal acts to aircraft.
Alaska Airlines declined to comment.
