Former NFL star Ryan Mallett has died at the age of 35 after drowning in Florida while on vacation at the beach.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office said: “A group of people in the water near the second strip of beach were trying to get back to shore. One of the individuals, an elderly male, remained in the water and lifeguards say he was not breathing when he was pulled out.”

Destin, an area part of Florida’s Gulf Coast, has received a series of storm and surf warnings in recent days, while the US National Weather Service warned swimmers of dangerous rip currents.

The world of American football is mourning the sudden death of Mallett, while long-time players and former colleagues have paid tribute to him. In a Twitter message from the NFL, it read: “The NFL family is deeply saddened by the passing of Ryan Mallett. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

The New England Patriots wrote on Twitter: “The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of former quarterback Ryan Mallett.”

Baltimore honored Mallett as an “extraordinary person and loyal teammate.” So former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wrote on Instagram: “We lost a great man. Thanks for everything Ryan.”
