An autopsy on a New Hampshire inmate who died awaiting trial on charges that he murdered his mother off the coast of Rhode Island to inherit millions of dollars was not found suspicious, according to an autopsy report released Wednesday by the office from the New Hampshire Attorney General.
Nathan Carman, 29, of Vernon, Vermont, was set to go on trial in October for what prosecutors described as a multimillion-dollar scheme to inherit.
Last year, Carman pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of his mother, Linda Carman of Middletown, Connecticut, and to fraud.

On June 15, while Carman was awaiting trial, he was found dead in a New Hampshire jail cell.
Cause of death and manner of death classified as “not suspicious” are not being released by the attorney general’s office, spokesman Michael Garrity told the Associated Press.
Similarly, at the request of the family, the U.S. Marshals Service in Vermont said it would not release Carman’s cause of death.

A death is not suspicious if it is determined that no crime was committed or that no one else was involved.
Carman faced an eight-count indictment alleging he organized a fishing trip with his mother in September 2016, with prosecutors alleging he intended to kill her and reporting that she was missing when his boat sank.
Eight days after leaving a marina in Rhode Island with his mother, Carman was discovered floating in an inflatable raft. His mother’s body was never found.

The prosecution alleged that Carman made modifications to the boat to make it more likely to sink, though Carman denied the charge.
The eight-pronged charge also alleged that Carman fatally shot his grandfather John Chakalos in 2013 when he slept, claiming he did so to acquire money and property from his wealthy grandfather’s estate.
The indictment never charged Carman with his grandfather’s death, and Carman denied involvement in either death.

Carman’s attorneys, Martin Minnella and David Sullivan, had dismissed the charges alleging that their client killed his grandfather because he was never charged with the crime.
