Former Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie suspects Donald Trump‘s reasons for holding onto sensitive government documents were probably much more “dumb and childish” than people expect.
“People think: is he going to give them to a foreign government, or sell them to someone, or blackmail people? You don’t understand Donald Trump. It’s just for showing off,” said Christie, who is challenging Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. during a job interview on CNN Wednesday night.
“He wants to keep pretending to be president. He can’t live with the fact that he isn’t. So that’s why he kept those documents. It seems childish and stupid, and it is, but I think that’s why.”
Trump was indicted on 37 criminal charges this month about his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House. Federal prosecutors charge him with withholding sensitive defense information and obstructing government efforts to recover it, endangering national security.
Trump initially argued that anything he took with him was automatically released. However, CNN on Monday got a tape from July 2021 — reportedly a key piece of information in the Justice Department case — in which Trump told book investigators that he possessed “highly confidential, classified” materials that he was not disclosing as president.
Trump has argued since then he actually had no secret documents with him, he just pretended to do so for the sake of ‘bravado’.
