BEIJING – China’s consulate general in Marseille has filed a complaint with France after the windows of a bus carrying a Chinese tour group in the southern city were smashed, resulting in minor injuries, the Chinese consular office said in a statement on Sunday.

The consulate general’s formal complaint called on France to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and their property, the statement said.

The bus was attacked by rioters on Thursday, according to state broadcaster CCTV, amid violence that has hit French cities in recent days since police shot a teenager of North African descent.

The Chinese tourists have now left France, the consulate said.

Chinese citizens in France or on their way to France should “strengthen prevention” and be “more vigilant and cautious” in light of the riots that have swept through the country in recent days, the consulate’s statement added.

Rioting across France appeared to be less intense on Saturday as tens of thousands of police officers were deployed to cities across the country after the teen’s funeral, though there was some tension in central Paris and sporadic clashes in Nice, Strasbourg and Marseille. REUTERS
