A mayor of a small Mexican town has married a crocodile bride in an ancient ritual for prosperity. He was seen kissing the reptile, whose snout was tied shut.
Nicknamed “Little Princess,” the seven-year-old crocodile is believed to represent a deity connected to Mother Earth. Her marriage to the local leader symbolizes the union of humans with the divine.
The tradition probably goes back centuries to the Chontal and Huave indigenous communities in the state of Oaxaca. “It is the union of two cultures. The union of the Huaves and the Chontales,” Mayor Victor Hugo Sosa told reporters.
