Washington DC police on Sunday arrested a man who allegedly carjacked three vehicles, shot and killed one of the drivers, killed two dogs in one of the vehicles and got into a shootout with an officer, police said.
The incident spanned multiple police jurisdictions and multiple agencies were involved in the investigation, making it complex, according to police.
Zachary O’Lare, deputy chief of the Prince George’s County Police Department, said at a news conference Sunday afternoon that police responded to reports of a carjacking just before 12:15 a.m. Sunday.

Investigators have learned that the male suspect, who has not been identified, carjacked a car and fled to the 8400 block of Central Avenue.
Once there, the suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle, and as the female victim began to flee the scene, the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots, killing her.
The man then carjacked another vehicle containing three dogs.

Police said the suspect shot and killed two of the dogs before fleeing to Washington, D.C. with police hot on his trail.
The stolen vehicle came to a stop at 52nd and North Sheriff Road, where the suspect got out and attempted to take another vehicle.
Instead, he was chased by a Capitol Heights Police Department officer who engaged in a shootout with the suspect, police said.
Neither side was hit by gunfire.

Members of the Metropolitan Police Department were also on the scene and helped apprehend the suspect.
“I’ve been doing this job for a long time and it’s extremely rare to come across someone who has such a disregard for life,” said O’Lare. “I am grateful to be able to let the community know that this suspect is in custody, but what I do not want is to overshadow the damage he has done to our community today.”
