The UN children’s agency UNICEF has called for an immediate end to the gun violence that killed at least three children in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin on Monday.
“UNICEF regrets all acts of violence against children and calls for an immediate end to armed violence,” UNICEF said in a statement.
The agency said at least three children were killed and many injured, according to recent reports, with hundreds of families displaced by the ongoing conflict.
Tensions have been running high in the occupied West Bank in recent months, amid repeated Israeli raids on Palestinian towns.
Israeli forces launched their largest military operation in more than 20 years in Jenin on Monday, killing at least 10 Palestinians and injuring more than 100, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
“In the past two years, children have witnessed three escalating incidents of violence in and around the Gaza Strip and numerous conflict-related incidents in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem,” the statement said.
According to UNICEF, 33 children have been killed since the beginning of this year, including 27 Palestinians and 6 Israelis.
“Grave violations against children, including killing and maiming, are unacceptable,” the statement said.
The agency urged all parties to protect children and refrain from using violence, especially against children.
