US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Saturday urged stronger communication between China and the United States to improve economic decision-making and challenged Beijing to join a global initiative to help poorer countries tackle climate change.
“Despite bilateral tensions, the high level of trade exchanges last year showed that there is room to engage in trade and investment,” Ms Yellen told her counterpart, Chinese Vice Premier He Ligen, at the start of the meeting, which according to US officials it is expected to last more than three hours.
Ms. Yellen said it is essential that the two countries focus on issues of common interest and resolve differences through dialogue.
“Amid a complicated global economic outlook, there is an urgent need for the two largest economies to communicate closely and exchange views on how we can respond to various challenges,” Ms Yellen told Vice Premier He, the top official. China’s top economy.
Ms Yellen and other US officials are on a difficult diplomatic mission, trying to repair ties with China after the US military shot down and shot down a Chinese balloon over the United States, as they continue to urge Beijing to end practices they see as harmful to American and Western companies.
Mrs. Yellen is expected to stay in China until Sunday and her visit comes after that of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the first at such a level in 5 years./ VOA
