The open sores that appear in the mouth are called oral ulcers. They are white or yellow in color and are generally accompanied by a sharp pain, which is most felt when the person is eating. The pain is quite acute when salty or spicy food goes over the ulcer. Mouth sores can appear anywhere in the mouth – on the inside of the cheeks, lips, tongue, palate and at the base of the gums.

Mouth ulcers are caused by a malfunction of the pitta dosha. The condition is called Mukha Paaka in Sanskrit. There are several factors that can cause this. Some of them are as follows:-

Digestive problems are the main causes of canker sores. If a mouth ulcer develops suddenly, it may be due to excessive heat generated in the body from consuming hot foods.

1. In case of mouth ulcers, hot and spicy food should be stopped immediately. These will make the pain of the sores worse. Caffeine and tea should also be stopped.

2. Consuming more vegetables in the diet helps to always be protected against stomach ulcers. Greens also provide the necessary fiber for the movement of the intestines. This prevents constipation.

3. It is advisable to stop eating fatty foods – especially those containing oil – until the sores have healed.

4. Papaya is a very good fruit to consume when you have mouth ulcers. It soothes the mouth sores and aids in a quick recovery. Yam is also beneficial for mouth ulcer problems.

(3) Ayurvedic Treatments for Mouth Ulcers

Ayurveda prescribes the Irimedadi tailam for topical application over the canker sores. It provides pain relief and aids in a quick recovery. Instead of Irimedadi tailam, camphor powder can also be applied to the sores.

(4) Home remedies for mouth ulcers

1. Grind the leaves of the Indian plum (jambula). Break down their paste in water and gargle with this water. It will give instant relief from the pain of the canker sores.

2. Gargling with the water of the adulsa (Justicia adhadota) also provides instant relief from mouth ulcers.

3. Mix the zest of one lemon with white catechu. Grind them into a very fine paste. Apply this directly to the ulcer. The ulcer is treated almost immediately.

4. Take two or three leaves from the guava tree and some catechu. Chew them together. This will heal even the most stubborn sores within a few days.

5. Mix some catechu in water until it gets a pasty consistency. Apply this paste on the sores.

6. Mix a ripe banana with the curd prepared from cow’s milk. Eat this for dessert.

It will provide a permanent solution to the mouth ulcer problems.
