ROME — Film legend Sophia Loren is recovering from successful surgery on a broken leg after she fell at her home in Switzerland, an agent of the 89-year-old Italian actor said on Monday.
Officer Andrea Giusti said in an email that Loren fell in a bathroom on Sunday and that the operation was performed later that day. The operation “went very well and now all we have to do is wait,” Giusti said.
The actress broke both her hip and a femur, the officer said.
It was not immediately clear when Loren would be released from the hospital.
Loren has lived in a Swiss villa on Lake Geneva for decades. Earlier this month, she appeared beaming with Italian designer Giorgio Armani in Venice during a fashion show on the sidelines of the city’s annual film festival.
Last week she celebrated her 89th birthday. She was scheduled to appear at a restaurant bearing her name in Bari, a city in southern Italy, but her fall forced a cancellation of the event. According to her agent, Loren gave the restaurant the right to use her name and likeness.
