Teams linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL are accused of “killing villagers, displaced folks and Christian believers.”

Armed teams with ties to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS) have stepped up assaults on civilians in Burkina Faso, Human Rights Watch (HRW) mentioned in a report.

The NGO launched the report on Wednesday, documenting the deaths of a minimum of 128 civilians in seven assaults by “armed teams” throughout the nation since February 2024, which “violated worldwide humanitarian regulation and constituted conflict crimes.”

The report states that the teams “massively massacred villagers, displaced folks and Christian believers”.

“We’re witnessing an extremely disturbing enhance in Islamist violence,” mentioned Ilaria Allegrozzi, senior Sahel researcher at HRW, calling on the teams’ leaders to halt their “lethal assaults.”

Led by the navy authorities of Ibrahim Traore, the West African nation has been battling an armed insurgency by the ISIL department within the Higher Sahara (ISGS) and the al-Qaeda-linked Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) since they invaded Burkina Faso from neighboring Mali in 2016.

An assault by the JNIM on civilians digging trenches across the north-central city of Barsalogho in late August reportedly killed some 400 folks.

The Armed Battle Location and Occasion Knowledge Mission was cited within the report as discovering that greater than 26,000 folks – together with troopers, militiamen and civilians – have been killed in Burkina Faso since 2016.
