California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed a legislation requiring faculties to restrict or ban college students’ use of cell telephones on campus throughout faculty days.

Each faculty district, constitution faculty, and county workplace of schooling should implement a coverage limiting or prohibiting using smartphones in the course of the faculty day by July 1, 2026.

The coverage should even be up to date each 5 years, in accordance with the legislation, also referred to as the Cellphone-Free Colleges Act.

“AB 3216 isn’t just about educating within the classroom, it is usually about defending the psychological well being and social and emotional well-being of California’s kids,” she continued.

The legislation has drawn combined reactions from some schooling teams within the state. The California Lecturers Affiliation and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond assist the measure, whereas the California Faculty Boards Affiliation opposes it.
