California Highway Patrol (CHP) arrested a finance officer from the state’s comptroller’s office on suspicion of grand larceny on Wednesday.

Miguel Espinosa, a 58-year-old employee of the State’s Controller’s Disbursement Bureau, was arrested by the CHP Office of Protective Intelligence, Sacramento County Jail records show.

State Comptroller Malia Cohen said CHP issued a warrant against Espinosa as part of an ongoing investigation by her office, and he was arrested on suspicion of grand larceny as a result.

“I have ordered his immediate resignation,” Cohen, California’s chief fiscal officer, said in a statement Wednesday. “I would like to thank CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee and the CHP Capitol Protection Section, Special Investigations Unit for their prompt response to my inquiry regarding this matter. Their prompt action resulted in the recovery of property that would otherwise have been lost. In light of the fact that this is an active investigation, I have no further comments at this time.”

He was booked in Sacramento County Main Jail on five counts of grand larceny and five counts of buying or receiving stolen property.

Jail records say Espinosa is not eligible for bail and will appear in Sacramento Superior Court Friday at 3 p.m. local time.

Cohen was sworn in in January by Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom as the first black woman and first African American to serve as California’s state comptroller.

In remarks after taking her oath of office, Cohen pledged, “The work to create a more equitable California has already begun. I look forward to being fiscally accountable, with transparency and innovation in mind,” reported The Sacramento Observer earlier. She previously served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Just an hour’s drive from Sacramento, the state capital, San Francisco, and its crime problem in particular, is once again in the national spotlight following the fatal stabbing of Cash App founder and technical director Bob Lee.
