The Attorney General of the Buenos Aires Supreme Court released this Wednesday the 2022 homicide statistics in the Province. According to the report that compiles all the crimes denounced in Justice, there was a drop in 10,2% in the line of intentional homicides in relation to the previous year, when the country was still with restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In total they were reported 750 fatalities in 716 events. 91.5% corresponds to criminal jurisdiction and the remaining 8.5% to Juvenile Criminal Responsibility Jurisdiction, according to the report of the body led by Attorney Julio Conte Grand.

Last year, a total of 1,777 preparatory criminal investigations (IPP) were registered that carried the cover of “homicide”. 40.3% (716) corresponded to consummated painful homicides; and 59.7% (1,061) to situations of violence in which an attempt was made to kill but that goal was not achieved. In 2021 they had reported 797 IPP for consummated painful homicides.

The period in which there was a most pronounced drop was in 2020, when the quarantine was strict and for more than six months there were almost no activities allowed on public roads: then 650 violent deaths were registered in provincial territory .

Thus, the homicide rate, which is taken for every 100,000 inhabitants, was 4.27. In Rosario, the department with the highest number of cases in the country, it was 22.1 in the same period, and five times the national average.

In the City of Buenos Aires, in 2022, there were 88 intentional homicides, the lowest number in the last 28 years, and 14% less than in 2019, the last measurement prior to the pandemic, with a rate of 2.86.

According to the Province’s report, 620 of the victims were men and 130 were women. The evolution of recent years marks the following numbers in terms of the number of criminal investigations initiated: 982 were registered in 2018, 918 in 2019, 919 in 2020, 797 in 2021 and 716 in 2022.

The use of firearms leads the method to commit these crimes, since it appears in 56.3% of the cases, followed by bladed weapons (20.7%). In addition, 60.2% were on the street and 53.2% at night.

“Among the main motives identified in consummated intentional homicides, 23.7% respond to interpersonal conflicts, 15.9% were committed in the context of a robbery, 11.3% correspond to acts of femicide; and 7, 1% is linked to violence in the family environment,” the Attorney General reported.

La Matanza, the most populous jurisdiction and with the highest number of murders in the Province, increased its events: it went from 120 in 2021 to 124 in 2022.

Among the shocking homicides of 2022 are those of the married couple of José Enrique Del Río (75) and María Mercedes Alonso (72) in their house in Vicente López, on August 24.

The son of the victims, Martín Santiago Del Río (48), is in custody for the case.

Another of the victims was the businessman Andrés Blaquier (62), to steal his BMW 1200 motorcycle on the Pan-American highway, in Pilar, on October 29, when he was driving at kilometer 50 with his partner.

Although murders were down slightly, the overall rate continues to grow.

Last year, 946,510 cases were filed in the province, that is, 9.1% more than the previous year. It means that in the territory led by Axel Kicillof, 108 crimes per hour are recorded. Or 2,593 episodes of insecurity each day of the year.

And in the juvenile jurisdiction -that is, crimes in which those responsible are under 18 years of age- the increase was 19%. In total there were 22,018 cases involving minor defendants.

In eighteen of the twenty judicial departments the number of complaints increased compared to the previous 12 months.

The jurisdictions that did not increase are Trenque Lauquen; Avellaneda-Lanús and San Nicolás, although in all of them the reduction is less than 2% of the total.

But there were departments with increases greater than 10%: they were La Plata (17.9%), Necochea (14.5%) and Morón (14.3%).

In juvenile crime, the most pronounced upward jumps are observed in Morón (47.3%) and Pergamino (32.1%).

Acts of violence against people represent 14.5% of all criminal cases. In other words, 134,497 wounded, hurt, attacked, beaten that end up in court. It grew 16.8% in this item.

Weapon abuse showed a decrease of 21.7%, while aggravated minor injuries of 18.9%.

But robberies and assaults make up the most populated column of crimes: 338,570 investigations for crimes against property were initiated, or 36.6% of the total for the year. In relation to the previous period, they increased by 7.9%.

Some cases: aggravated theft of vehicles left on public roads grew 32.3%, fraud 14.2% and simple theft 11.6%. Also in the category other crimes against property, a relevant growth is observed compared to 2021, of the order of 16.5%, mainly explained by the increase in the crime of computer fraud, said the Attorney General.
