According to the experts, there were two people who committed the crime, but they still do not know who the DNA remains correspond to.
Irina López was 15 years old when she bled to death after a sexual assault in a tenancy in the city of Corrientes, in January 2018. The investigation established that she suffered a rape by at least two people but only one of those responsible came to the defendant’s bench and ended up sentenced to life imprisonment.
The judges of Criminal Court 1, Raúl Juan Carlos Guerín, Ana del Carmen Figueredo and Cynthia Teresita Godoy Prats, sentenced Wenderson de Souza for the crimes of sexual abuse with doubly aggravated carnal access for having been committed by two or more people and for the death of the victim.
The event occurred in a pension in the San Marcos neighborhood and at one point the case seemed to be heading towards impunity. The judge in charge had ordered in September 2019 the dismissal of the now convicted and Marcos Rey Silva Jr., both Brazilians.
Previously, four other men of the same nationality had been separated from the investigation: Felipe Macedo de Souza, Laercio De Macedo, Luis De Macedo and Ana Carolina De Jesús Santana. Those decisions had been ratified by the Corrientes Criminal Chamber.
In July 2020, the Superior Court of Justice granted an appeal for Cassation by the lawyers of the victim’s family and ordered the Investigating Court 1 and the Prosecutor’s Office to expedite the investigation.
Irina was fifteen years old when she died from brutal sexual abuse.
From the reconstruction of the event, it emerged that Wenderson de Souza had arrived in October at the tenancy where Irina lived with her mother and a sister. The teenager, who had given birth very recently, began a love affair with the young Brazilian.
On January 2, the group of Brazilians who stayed in the tenancy with Wenderson decided to have a barbecue to celebrate the birthday of one of them. The entertainment was held at noon in a small field that is next to the pension.
After noon, Irina and Wenderson retired to one of the rooms. A while before, the young man had agreed with the adolescent’s mother a sum of money in exchange for washing her clothes. When the woman withdrew towards the pool area, they both headed towards the room.
At a certain moment the mother noticed that her grandson was crying and sent her youngest daughter to see what was happening. One of the people told him that the teenager had gone out to buy more meat.
A few minutes later, it was Irina’s mother who decided to find out on her own what was happening. That’s how she ran into Wenderson in the hallway, who quickly left the place.
As soon as she entered the room, the woman found her daughter without vital signs and with obvious signs of having suffered a brutal sexual attack. Forensic doctors found tremendous tears and agreed that the teenager died from intense pain.
The experts found in the body of the young woman two male DNA. One of them corresponded to Wenderson and the second, at first, was associated with Marcos Rey Silva Jr. because he had a match of more than 92%. However, the specialists said that this percentage was not enough to determine that he was the perpetrator of the sexual assault. A second DNA test carried out in Buenos Aires confirmed that King Silva had not participated in the event.
The prosecutor in the case, Sonia Meza, maintained that the second man who participated in the event could not yet be identified. Justice has his DNA profile but so far the identity could not be established.
