HOPKINTON – John Porter, a now former Hopkinton Deputy Chief of Policehas been charged with raping a teenager nearly two decades ago.
A Middlesex County grand jury on Monday indicted 54-year-old Porter on three counts of rape of a child.
The alleged incidents, according to the The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, took place in 2004 and 2005 when Porter was a school resource officer. They involved a 15-year-old student and took place several times outside the school grounds, according to authorities.
The investigation was conducted by the Massachusetts State Police and the District Attorney’s Office.

In a joint statement, Hopkinton Mayor Norman Khumalo and Police Chief Joseph Bennett said they were “deeply troubled” by the allegations.
“We are deeply disturbed and alarmed by these allegations,” Khumalo and Bennett said. “These alleged crimes have no place in our community or anywhere else, and we extend our condolences to the victim. The Hopkinton Police Department continues to cooperate fully with the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office. Any further investigation into this matter should be referred to the district attorney in Middlesex County.”
An arraignment date for the Middlesex Superior Court has not been set.
Porter was on paid leave
Porter, who was a Hopkinton police officer for 30 years and Upton for three years before that, has been on paid administrative leave since August. No reason was given at the time it was announced.

According to the district attorney, Porter was no longer employed by the Hopkinton Police Department as of last Friday.
“On Friday, Porter informed the city that he wants to retire, and the city has accepted his immediate separation from work,” Khumalo and Bennett said in their joint statement.
Porter resigned as coach of the girls’ soccer team
Earlier on Monday, Porter posted on Twitter that he was stepping down from football coaching at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Uptonwhere he coached girls’ soccer.

“Friday I announced to BVT that I am retiring,” Porter tweeted. “The past ten years as head coach of the women’s soccer team have been nothing but an honor, a privilege and a time of pride for me and my family. I will miss all the players, parents and teachers and all the support they have shown us.” .”
