You and your pet are inseparable, right?
If you’re one of the many pet owners who can’t bear to leave their dog, cat, or other type of pet behind, you’ll be pleased to know that the trend of taking your furry friend on vacation is on the rise. Many even choose to include pets in travel plans.
But as with all good things, taking your pet on a trip can go awry if you don’t plan things right.
The travel insurance people know plans. That’s why we’ve put together 6 important tips that will help you and your pet holiday together as a team without the risk of accidents.
So here we go with the smart guidelines that every seasoned traveler with a pet should review and follow.
Six essential things to do before traveling with a pet
• For a road trip: Keep your dog or cat in a special carrier designed for travel. If that doesn’t work, make sure your pet’s range of motion is limited to the back seat. This way he or she can’t bother you while you only have to concentrate on driving, following traffic signs and getting to your destination safely. Don’t forget to include regular rest breaks where you and your pet can stretch their limbs, exercise and relieve themselves. Follow the rule about vehicles: Never let a child or pet in alone, as cars can heat up quickly and become death traps – a vehicle of tragedy.
• If you are traveling by air, make sure you inquire about the rules for taking your pet with you. It’s best to take your pet in the cabin while you’re on the plane, but if that’s not an option, choose a direct flight that carries less risk than a connecting flight. Always carry a photo of your pet with you for visual identification.
• Provide all necessary identity papers. If you can get your pet microchipped, that’s a great way to confirm identification. Make sure the tag on your pet has your current contact information, including your cell phone number. And it’s a good idea to have your pet’s vaccination and medical records in your possession.
• Don’t forget to put all your pet’s essentials in your luggage. This includes preferred toys, pillow to sleep on and snacks.
• The hospitality industry has become increasingly pet-friendly, so make plans to stay at a hotel that welcomes you and your pet. You can also find vacation home hosts who are happy to rent to people with pets, as well as home sharing companies that cater to your pet needs. Make sure you are aware of bringing your pet so you don’t run into any bumps upon arrival.
• There is no point in taking your pet on holiday just to sit in the hotel room. Make sure all of your fun is pet-friendly, and research restaurants and recreational spots to allow your pet access.
• Talk to an experienced professional insurance company about the best travel insurance for you and your pet.
