The cybersecurity company Surfshark has conducted research that shows that Sudan has violated the UN resolution on human rights on the internet an impressive nine times since it was signed in 2021.
Sudan experienced internet outages in April 2023, and it was not the first time this happened as the country unfortunately faces challenges in the digital sector quite frequently.
Head of research at NetBlocks says the internet is critical to maintaining security. Apart from Sudan, four other African countries have broken their promise. The countries include Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Somalia and Nigeria. According to research by Surfshark, 16 internet outages were reported by these five African countries during or after the resolution was passed.
Company spokesperson Gabriele Racaityte-Krasauske revealed that besides Sudan, these other four African countries also failed to comply with the UN resolution.
According to Surfshark’s Internet Shutdown Tracker, there were 16 Internet shutdowns and ongoing restrictions during and after the UN resolution was passed. Only 14 of the 193 UN member states have to comply with the UN human rights resolution.
