The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) have reaffirmed their commitment to the smooth transfer of security responsibilities to the Somali security forces in accordance with the Somali Transition Plan.
Speaking at a joint press conference at Mogadishu’s Villa Somalia, the SRCC and Chief of ATMIS Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, and Somalia’s Information, Culture and Tourism Minister Daud Aweis said that operations against Al-Shabaab to destroy the remaining areas under their control were underway in different parts of the country.
“I wish to reaffirm our commitment to carry out the transfer of security responsibilities to the Somali security forces in accordance with the Somali Transition Plan and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. In this regard, ATMIS has finalized plans to begin the withdrawal of 2,000 troops, which should be done by the end of this month,” SRCC Souef said.
amb. Souef expressed confidence that the FGS has generated enough troops to take over security responsibilities once ATMIS forces leave.
“I have full confidence in the capabilities of the Somali security forces. The SNA has shown a growing ability to conduct military operations against the terrorist group over the past year. I would like to warmly commend His Excellency Hassan’s leadership.
Sheikh Mohamud has been instrumental in generating forces and engaging different segments of the Somali public in the fight against Al-Shabaab,” he noted.
Minister Aweis praised the Somali security forces for their determination to ensure peace and stability across the country and urged the security services to continue working together to remove the threat posed by Al-Shabaab.
“As you all know, operations are underway in many parts of the country to take out Al-Shabaab. In addition, the second part of the operations led by the Federal Government of Somalia is expected to start soon,” he said.
The minister outlined several initiatives taken by government officials and agencies to ensure that the Somali public enjoys relative peace and stability.
“The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, HE Hamza Abdi Barre, has called for an acceleration of the liberation of the remaining areas held by Kharijites Al-Shabaab,” added Minister Aweis.
The two leaders welcomed the arrival of the new UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia (SRSG), Catriona Laing, and pledged to work with the UN to stabilize the country.
In line with UN resolution 2670, ATMIS is expected to withdraw 2,000 troops by the end of this month in a phased transfer of security responsibilities to the Somali security forces to implement the Somali transition plan. The AU peacekeeping mission is expected to leave Somalia completely by December 31, 2024.
