Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders has died on the age of 90, NASA Administrator Invoice Nelson stated Friday.

Anders took the enduring Earthrise photograph, exhibiting the moon’s floor and Earth orbiting the moon, on Christmas Eve in 1968 throughout the Apollo 8 mission.

The Apollo 8 crew consisted of Commander Frank Borman, Lunar Module Pilot Anders, and Command Module Pilot James Lovell. The three served as crew for the primary manned Apollo mission launched aboard the Saturn V and the primary manned Apollo craft to orbit the moon.
