After announcing his plans to send cluster munitions to Ukraine, Joe Biden held a meeting with the president of China.
During the talks, he told Xi Jinping to “be careful” because Beijing relies on Western investment.
“This is not a threat. This is an observation. Since Russia entered Ukraine, 600 US corporations have withdrawn from Russia. And you have told me that your economy depends on investments from Europe and the United States. And be careful, be careful.” Biden said.
Asked what Xi’s response was, Biden said: “He listened and didn’t… argue. And if you notice, he didn’t talk about Russia at all.”
Putin and Xi held two days of talks in March with warm words of friendship between China and Russia and joint criticism of the West, but with no sign of a diplomatic breakthrough on Ukraine.
There are heightened tensions and pessimism in US-China relations over national security issues, including Taiwan, Russia’s war in Ukraine and growing bans on US exports.
