A meeting between President Biden and congressional leaders on the debt ceiling, scheduled to take place on Friday, has been postponed until next week.

Fox News confirmed the delay late Thursday afternoon.

Just two days ago, Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and other leaders agreed to talk at the staff level about how to raise the debt ceiling before the administration is unable to pay its current obligations in early June. Republicans want to raise the borrowing limit only if Democrats agree to cuts, but Democrats reject that, wanting only a clean debt ceiling.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the talks were postponed, but a lack of progress is the kind of issue that would be enough for both sides to agree to a postponed runoff between Biden and top congressional leaders.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., told Fox News Digital Wednesday afternoon that the talks from earlier in the week didn’t get very far, saying he had no readout of how the talks went on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Yesterday and then today, whether they’re making progress, I don’t know,” Emmer said. “But they are still meeting and there is a plan for a second meeting, at least from the speaker and the president.”
