President Biden on Friday repeated a false claim that his son, Beau Biden, died while serving in the Iraq War, but also falsely stated that he was running for president while serving as vice president under former President Barack Obama.

“You know, the bottom line is this — I ran for president — I ran for president for a fundamental reason. I had no intention of running for president again,” Biden said during a speech at Nash Community College in Rocky Mount, North. carolina.

“I ran for president when I was vice president, and then Barack and I spent eight years together, and then the new administration came along, and things changed in our lives and our family in the meantime. I lost my son — we lost our son in Iraq. Anyway, I wasn’t planning on running,” he added.

Contrary to his claims, Beau tragically died of glioblastoma in May 2015 at Walter Reed Military Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Beau was on tour in Iraq from 2008 to 2009.

Biden claims his son’s illness may have been caused by toxic fire pits in Iraq, but he has still claimed on numerous other occasions that his son would die in Iraq. Those examples include speaking last month with Marines stationed in Japan, and speaking in Colorado in 2022.

His additional statement that he was running for president while he was vice president seemed to be a point of confusion, as he unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2007, but only ran again for the 2020 presidential primaries.
