The majority of Americans are deeply concerned about rising crime in their cities as President Joe Biden’s national approval rating takes a nosedive.
A new Marist Polling poll found that Biden’s approval rating fell four percentage points in March to 42%, from 46% in a February poll conducted around the president’s State of the Union address.
The poll found that 68% of Americans believe crime is a “real threat in most communities.”

The poll shows that crime is not a partisan issue among voters: 58% of Democratic respondents see it as a threat, while 80% of Republicans see it as a problem, and 69% of independents are also concerned about the crime in their community.

While the majority of respondents see crime as a serious problem, only 31% think it is being blown out of proportion. According to the poll, 50% of all voters disapprove of Biden’s approach to crime.
According to the Major Cities Chiefs Association’s 2022 Crime Report, Portland’s homicide rate is up 236% since 2019, Chicago’s 41%, and Philadelphia’s 45%.

The economy was the top concern for 31% of Americans, followed by preserving democracy as the top concern for 20% of respondents and health care for 9%.

According to the poll, the economy was the most pressing issue for both Republicans, 48%, and Independents, 33%. Despite inflation is 6% higher in February, preserving democracy was the top issue for 25% of likely-democrat voters.
“President Biden’s improved position after the State of the Union was short-lived. With a struggling economy, the Trump investigations and a host of other issues, the political agenda remains crowded and Biden has been unable to keep a grip,” Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, said of the results.

The majority of Americans, 54%, support a bill that would ban gender reassignment for minors, while 43% would not support a bill that would prevent children from using medical care to change their sex.
The poll was conducted March 20-23, with a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
