Boston police have identified the suspect who allegedly fired multiple shots at a Boston police officer on Friday night.
John Lazare, 23, of Brockton, Massachusetts, is facing a slew of charges, including assault and battery with a firearm, armed robbery and assault with a dangerous weapon, Boston Police Department officials said at a news conference Saturday, June 10.
“This is another example of people who have no respect for life in any way,” Police Commissioner Michael Cox said at the press conference.

According to the police report, at about 9:15 p.m. on Friday, June 9, the unknown officer saw Lazare in the process of robbing a delivery boy.

The officer said Lazare matched the description of someone wanted on Wednesday for robbing a Domino’s Pizza delivery boy on the same street.
When the officer went to confront him, Lazare reportedly opened fire and hit the officer several times.
According to police, Lazare tried to evade arrest by running into a store and climbing onto the roof of a building. He would have jumped off the roof, ended up in an alley and injured his leg.
The Boston Police Department officer called for help through a police channel, and colleagues came to arrest Lazare and took the injured officer to Boston Medical Center. The officer was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said Saturday the officer is expected to survive. His name has not been released.

Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Jack Mawn issued a statement following the officer’s shooting, praising the officer and sharing his commitment to keeping people in Massachusetts safe.
“When they hurt, we hurt,” Mawn said in a statement. “Police is a dangerous profession. The men and women in this profession wear body armor and carry a gun just to go to work.”
“If they hurt, we hurt.”
“It’s a noble profession – a calling, more than a profession,” he continued. “Those who answer the call, who join the ranks, know the risks. There are times, like last night, when we face this reality.”

Mawn said that since May 31, 2023, 166 officers have been shot while on duty in the US, and 20 of them have been killed.
