Meanwhile, the Transport Safety Board of Canada (TSB) said it will launch an investigation into the actions of the Polar Prince support ship, which towed Titan from Newfoundland to the site of the Titanic wreck in the Atlantic Ocean.

The TSB said its action was “in line with the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act and international agreements.”

“In the coming days, we will coordinate our activities with other relevant institutions,” the statement said. “This is all the information currently available. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.”

The Polar Prince is a Newfoundland ship owned by the Miawpukek First Nation.

Miawpukek Chief Mi’sel Joe told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on Friday that the investigation will be upsetting for the Polar Prince team.

“It will be difficult for the crew,” he said. “They look after the ship, they take care of themselves and the family on board. My heart is with them. For all of them. It’s a loss of life and it’s never easy. family.”

The Polar Prince lost contact with Titan early Sunday, about 90 minutes after it began pulling the diver towards the Titanic, 700 kilometers (435 miles) off the coast of Newfoundland.

A remote-controlled vehicle found the tail cone of the Titan submersible on the seafloor about 1,600 feet (488 meters) from the Titanic’s bow.

A U.S. Coast Guard official said the additional debris discovered near the site was “consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber.”
