Pausing artificial intelligence development in the US while China continues to develop its own programs would pose a risk to Americans, Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy told Fox News.

“A temporary pause among US companies – if China really goes ahead with it – will do nothing to mitigate the risks of AI,” Ramaswamy said in an exclusive interview. “It exacerbates them because Americans are at even greater risk instead.”

Elon Musk and other tech industry leaders last month called for a temporary pause on major AI experiments, citing potential risks to society. However, others have suggested that pausing development would only hinder the US and allow China to get ahead in the AI race.

“I have some concerns about the advancement of AI,” Ramaswamy told Fox News. “In the name of helping humanity, AI poses many other risks to humanity that may be difficult to reverse.”

Musk has warned that rapid advances in AI could significantly affect elections, pose a civilizational threat to humanity, and blur the truth of reality. Eliezer Yudkowsky, a decision theorist at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, said the Tesla CEO’s warnings are not serious enough and that AI could push humanity to extinction.

On Wednesday, Musk met Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who developed a high-level framework outlining new regulations for AI.

But Ramaswamy said it is crucial to maintain a competitive edge over China in AI.

“It is important as US president not to impose restrictions on the US that China itself does not adopt, but to lead diplomatically in a way that we can address those risks together,” he said. “We cannot tie our own hands if China does not adopt the same restrictions.”

The Chinese Communist Party earlier this month proposed measures requiring Chinese AI developers to incorporate socialist values into their products to avoid regime undermining and social order disruption. If China’s AI gets ahead of the US and becomes the standard around the world, socialist principles could affect other countries, a panel of AI experts warned the Senate last week.

Ramaswamy, who founded a multi-billion dollar biotech company, rates his knowledge of AI as high compared to other politicians.

“I even ran a company that used AI to discover and design drugs, even AI in the drug development process,” he said.

Recent AI developments have already impacted the medical and pharmaceutical industries, with a study showing that machines read ultrasound better than humans. A study also found that AI can predict lung cancer in some patients.

Ramaswamy does not believe AI is America’s biggest threat.

“China poses a much greater risk to the US right now than AI,” he told Fox News. “We need to keep our eyes wide open to that fact.”
