LACONIA, NH — A car crashed into a busy New Hampshire restaurant, injuring more than a dozen customers inside, authorities said.
The vehicle struck the Looney Bin Bar & Grill just after 12:40 p.m. Sunday and came to a stop well inside, pinning a man in the bathroom, restaurant owner Michelle Watson said.
“Everyone jumped right in and helped,” she told WHDH-TV. “Everyone jumped in to make sure everyone was okay.”
Police Chief Matt Canfield said three vehicles were involved in the accident: one turned left from a parking lot across the street, while a second drove in the center lane. The driver making the turn did not see a third oncoming vehicle and the ensuing collision caused that third vehicle to crash into the restaurant.
Emergency services have transported 14 people to area hospitals with non-life-threatening medical problems, including significant lower leg injuries, cuts and bruises. Another 20 people were examined at the scene by emergency services but did not require hospital treatment, the Laconia Fire Department said.
“There were a lot of people inside because it was lunchtime and a holiday weekend,” fire captain Chad Vaillancourt said in the statement.
The building, on Highway 3 north of Concord, sustained significant damage.
“I don’t know when we can open again, but we will,” Watson said.
