“CBS Saturday Morning” featured a segment suggesting that adding insects to a diet could benefit a growing world impacted by climate change.
To counter meat, soybean-derived proteins, or other carbon-rich foods, the segment detailed efforts by climate experts and scientists to research agricultural insects to protect the planet.
“We all know how important insects are to the environment, but climate researchers say insects could be a game changer in the fight to protect the planet in ways you may not have imagined,” said host Dana Jacobson.
Reporter Tina Kraus explained: “In some parts of the world, it’s common in the kitchen to add some bugs to the mix. Now climate experts think the protein-rich pests could offer a real solution to the global food crisis. Scientists in Germany are urging don’t care about getting the bugs on your plate, they see another advantage.”

GREG GUTFELD: WHAT’S THE UP WITH ALL THE PEOPLE WHO EAT INSECTS
One scientist interviewed said their intention is not to force bugs onto menus, but to use them as an alternative to animal feed.
“In order to have a more sustainable production of proteins, we need this and I see insects as a perfect tool,” the scientist argued. “And you can make so many things out of insects and make the world a better place.”
Kraus explained that this development is in response to the “massive growth of soybeans” that are “blamed on extensive deforestation” while agricultural insects require less food and water to sustain.
“An estimated 1.2 trillion insects are raised on farms each year as companies race to find a protein-rich, low-carbon solution to feed animals and the world’s population,” said Kraus.
Jacobson concluded, “And as insect farming booms around the world, researchers are busy like bees looking for more climate-friendly solutions.”

UTAH SCHOOL FEEDS CHILDREN ‘DISGUSTING’ INSECTS IN CLASSROOM FOR CLIMATE ASSIGNMENT ABOUT COWS KILLING THE EARTH
Climate activists, including world leaders and celebrities, have advocated for people to include insects in their daily diets as a way to support the planet. Contrary to previous prediction models, many bugs are expected to survive and even thrive in warmer climates, according to a recent Michigan State University study.
However, this push to get people to eat insects met fierce opposition in the United States. In March, a Utah teacher was caught on video urging her students that eating insects is a necessity to help the environment.

“We don’t want to eat bugs and it’s disgusting. But should we eat bugs? Yes, because we’re killing the world by raising cows and animals. So we shouldn’t get rid of cows, but try to balance our diet, so that not so much of our land is used to raise cows, because it kills the ozone layer,” the teacher said. “All the evidence has suggested that we should probably eat insects – it’s good for the environment, etc. But I knew Not that that was an offensive subject to point out.”
