BEIJING — A man in China’s Gansu province has been detained for allegedly using ChatGPT to generate a fake train accident story.

The rules, which took effect on January 10, are designed to curb the use of generative AI technology to modify online content.

A total of 25 Baijiahao accounts, a blog-like platform owned by Chinese technology giant Baidu, reported the “accident” involving IP addresses from various locations, according to the police statement.

It said the suspect, nicknamed Hong, was identified and arrested for fabricating false information after police tracked down all accounts and found his company involved.

Hong allegedly edited ChatGPT-generated news and uploaded it to the platform owned by Baidu, local police reported, adding that investigations were ongoing. REUTERS
