Many people experience discomfort in their fingers, hands, wrists and forearms. This can range from numbness, tingling as if the hand is falling asleep, loss of sensation, pain and loss of strength causing objects to fall.

I would like to give you ideas on how to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome or, if you suffer from this condition, how to get relief.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a very common condition of the forearm, wrist, hands and fingers, especially the thumb, index finger and middle finger, often caused by repetitive stress. Usually, this condition responds to conservative treatment versus surgery.

Since carpal tunnel syndrome affects so many people, I’d like to give you ideas to lessen the effects.

First, avoid overuse or repetitive strain. For example, instead of getting all your typing or typing done at once when replying to your emails, get up and do something else every once in a while. By taking breaks we can reduce the repetitive strain on the hands and wrists and give those areas a chance to rest and hopefully not get overly irritated.

Second, wear a carpal tunnel syndrome brace at night to support the wrist. This brace is like a long glove with thumb and fingers cut out. It has a plastic or metal support on the palm and wrist that prevents the wrist from bending and getting irritated. These can be purchased at your local drugstore.

Third, be aware of your wrist position. Try to keep your wrists in a neutral position when typing, typing, or using a computer mouse. If your wrist is in an uncomfortable position for a long time, it will become irritated.

Fourth, gently stretch your wrist up and down and stretch your fingers up and down individually in the morning and periodically throughout the day to maintain movement and flexibility.

Often there is a connection between carpal tunnel syndrome and our neck. Nerves exit the spine in the neck area and make their way to our wrist and hand. If the nerve in the neck becomes pinched, it can mimic carpal tunnel syndrome. That is why we always check both the wrist and the neck and focus our treatments on the right places.

Look to chiropractic care for safe, conservative, nonsurgical treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.
