A group of climate activists plans to block the White House Correspondents Dinner on Saturday night in an effort to send President Biden a message about climate change.
The group, Climate Defiance, tweeted a video on Thursday accusing Biden of committing “ecocide” after approving a 30-year oil drilling project in Alaska, the Willow Project, in March.
“We only have a few years left. Our lives are on the line. And yet our political leaders are eating and drinking and laughing like everything is fine,” the group said in a tweet thread. “So we will take matters into our own hands. In two days we will march to the White House Correspondents Dinner. And we will block it.”
“The president promised to protect us, but instead he stabbed us in the back,” the video says.

The Willow Project allows ConocoPhillips to use Alaskan land to produce an estimated 180,000 barrels of oil per day. The project will create 300 long-term jobs in addition to 2,500 construction jobs.
In a video shared by the group, a government vehicle was forced to turn around after attempting to enter the Washington Hilton, where the dinner is held, as protesters block the entrance.
“No more drilling,” the demonstrators were heard shouting.
Climate Defiance, in response to questions about possible arrests, said it aims to round up such a large group that arrests are not possible.
“It is not our intention to be arrested. We are aiming for a blockade in such large numbers that arrests will be impossible,” the group said.

Climate Defiance states on its website that it will have “legal training” for those interested in taking “arrestable action” at Saturday’s blockade, adding that they are raising money to potentially bail people out of jail.
“We will have a legal team, police contacts and de-escalation leads to provide additional security day action. We will be sorted into affinity groups by action role, use the buddy system, and will keep everyone updated on the action throughout the day,” the group states.
President Tamara Keith of the Association of White House Correspondents told ABC News, “We are aware of the planned protest. Security measures have been put in place.”
“No one can call Joe Biden a ‘climate friendly president’ as he destroys the planet with new oil and gas projects,” the group tweeted.

Climate Defiance tweeted a video showing the protesters at the White House Correspondents Garden Brunch in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, holding signs that read “End Fossil Fuels.”
The video showed several people being stopped by security from entering the building.
