Depression, or any mental illness for that matter, has long carried a stigma in Chinese society. The Chinese word for mental illness, “jingshen bing,” sounds like a derogatory term for a crazy person, “shenjing bing,” and people with mental health problems would always be seen as someone who is crazy.
