Common Studios launches first all-female Halloween haunted home as counter to ‘male-centric’ style

Common Studios hopes to create “highly effective feminine characters” to revive the “male-dominated” horror style throughout its annual Halloween occasion.

Earlier this yr, Common introduced the themes of eight new haunted mazes as a part of Halloween Horror Nights 2024. In an interview with the Los Angeles OccasionsJohn Murdy, artistic director of Halloween Horror Nights, revealed that this was intentional to counter the “hierarchy” of Common film monsters that had been “all boys.”

“I wish to create highly effective feminine characters,” Murdy says. “When horror began, it was fairly male-centric. Even within the ’80s — it was Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, Michael Myers. That is what we began out doing. It was that style of horror. However as time went on and the occasion grew and advanced, we stayed open to embracing the entire horror.”

Murdy stated the inspiration got here from the recognition of a 2021 haunted maze centered across the “Bride of Frankenstein,” which gave him confidence that an all-female model of the attraction might work.

“I actually like the feminine method,” Murdy says. “I’ve two daughters and truthfully, I in all probability have one of many world’s largest collections of Common Monsters paraphernalia.
