‘Decisive actions’ on AI are coming

The White House said on Tuesday it will soon take “decisive action” to get ahead of the rapid advancement of AI technology.

“The White House Chief of Staff is overseeing a process to rapidly develop decisive action that we can take in the coming weeks,” a White House official said.

“White House executives have been meeting 2 to 3 times a week to discuss this issue in addition to the day-to-day work being done in the White House and agencies,” the official added. “White House officials are also working on commitments from leading AI companies to address government and private sector challenges.”

The announcement came on the same day that President Biden was due to meet with a panel of AI-focused experts in San Francisco to discuss the technology’s opportunities and drawbacks.

It is part of a general push from the White House to erect guardrails as AI permeates more and more facets of everyday life, including the 2024 election cycle. A White House official noted that Biden has taken several recent steps to Regulation of AI, including convening a meeting with top artificial intelligence CEOs at the White House and rolling out a blueprint for an AI rights statement.

The official added that the Office of Management and Budget is tasked with “producing draft policies for federal agencies to ensure that the development, acquisition and use of AI systems are aimed at protecting the rights and safety of of the American people”.

Biden is expected to deliver a speech on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET on his administration’s commitment to “seize the opportunities and manage the risks” of AI.

Attendees expected at his AI meeting include Khan Academy founder Sal Khan, Stanford University Human-Centered AI Institute head Fei-Fei Li, and Algorithmic Justice League founder Joy Buolamwin.

The White House tapped Vice President Kamala Harris as AI czar earlier this year, reportedly in an effort to revamp her image in time for the 2024 election. However, the guidelines for both her and Biden’s schedules released on Monday evening suggest she will not be there for Tuesday’s meeting and speech.
