NEW DELHI – Delhi and Chandigarh recorded the heaviest one-day rainfall in 20 years on Saturday. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 126 mm of rainfall in a nine-hour span from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm in Delhi. Record rainfall was also recorded in Chandigarh for the first time in 20 years.
The last time it rained heavier than this in Delhi was more than 20 years ago on July 10, 2003. On that day, 133.4 mm of rain fell in Delhi, while on July 21, 1958 – more than 65 years ago – 266, 2 mm of rain fell. mm of rainfall was recorded in Delhi.
Chandigarh, the capital of the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, also saw record rainfall, with 302.3mm of rain in the 24 hours to 8.30am on Sunday. This is the heaviest rainfall since the establishment of the Chandigarh Observatory in 2009.
Heavy rains have resulted in 14 deaths in northern India, with most deaths in Himachal Pradesh.
Torrential rain also ravaged the entire state of Himachal Pradesh where five lives were lost and 200 people stranded in the Chandratal area of Lahaul Spiti.
A total of nine deaths have occurred in Himachal due to rain or rain-related incidents such as landslides. A woman was killed in a landslide in Kullu, while in another incident a person was buried alive after a landslide in Katiyan, Chamba.
In Central India, 264.9 mm of precipitation fell, which is 4 percent more than normal.
More rain is expected in the coming days and the Met department has issued warnings, especially to those heading to mountain stations for the holidays.
