“Sudan is heading towards death and destruction at an unprecedented speed,” said UN chief Antonio Guterres, as he asked donors to intervene and stop the unfolding disaster.

“The scale and speed of the death in Sudan and the destruction is unprecedented. Without strong international support, Sudan could quickly become a place of lawlessness, radiating insecurity throughout the region,” Guterres said.

The Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has been fighting since April 15 with paramilitary forces commanded by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, after the two fell into a bitter power struggle.

The United Nations has two appeals for handling the crisis, the humanitarian response inside Sudan and the refugee response outside its borders.

Appeals need $3 billion this year, but are less than 17 percent funded so far.

Multiple ceasefires have been agreed and broken in the war, which has killed more than 2,000 people and driven two million more from their homes, including at least 528,000 who have fled the country.
