A driver was rescued Friday after his car plunged more than 500 feet off a cliff at Mount Tamalpais in the Bay Area, authorities said.
Multiple agencies responded to the crash in the Ridgecrest Drive area of Marin County at approximately 7:53 p.m. Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office posted to Facebook. Three U.S. Air Force airmen had witnessed the vehicle fly over the cliff and attempted to render aid before first responders arrived, the sheriff’s office said.
A Marin County Fire Department captain rushed to the car and began lifesaving measures for the victim, the sheriff’s office said. The vehicle was 160 meters down the hill and was wedged between a broken tree and the slope.
A paramedic and rescue equipment were sent to the car using a 200-foot line, the sheriff’s office said. The person suffered serious injuries and was removed from the car and loaded onto a stretcher, according to the sheriff. The person was taken to an ambulance through the long queue and flown by helicopter to a trauma center.
Authorities also rescued a rescue worker via helicopter who was injured when he tried to get to the car.
