LONDON –

The Duchess of Edinburgh expressed her condolences on Wednesday after the death of an 81-year-old woman who was hit by a motorcycle belonging to the British royal family’s police escort.

Sophie, the wife of Prince Edward, expressed her condolences over the death of Helen Holland, who was hit by a car at a crossroads in West London on May 10.

“The Duchess of Edinburgh is deeply saddened to hear that Helen Holland has passed away,” said Buckingham Palace. “Her Royal Highness’s deepest condolences and sympathy go out to all of Mrs. Holland’s family.”

Holland’s son, Martin, told the BBC his mother died after suffering “several broken bones and massive internal injuries”. Holland, who is from Essex, was reportedly visiting her older sister in London.

Her son said she “fought for her life for almost two weeks, but due to irreversible damage to her brain, the battle finally came to an end today.”

The Independent Police Behavior Agency is investigating the accident.
