NEW DELHI — A dust storm swept through New Delhi on Tuesday, raising air pollution to dangerous levels and reducing visibility in the Indian capital.
Dust storms form when fast-moving winds blow dirt and debris into the air, making it difficult to see through or breathe in. They become particularly dangerous on roads and can obscure a driver’s view.
The local weather bureau predicted dust storms over the capital and some neighboring states.
Delhi topped the world’s list of most polluted cities with an air quality index of 973 as of 11:30 a.m. local time, well above the “dangerous” threshold of 300, according to website IQAir.
Scorching heat will also take over much of India this week. Heat waves are likely on Tuesday in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, and in some parts of Odisha on May 16-17.
