Former Miami Heat champion Dwyane Wade said he moved his family from Florida because he thought they “wouldn’t be accepted or comfortable there” because of the state’s anti-LGBTQ+ policies.
Wade explained his relationship with the state in an interview for “Headliners with Rachel Nichols”; the clip was shared exclusively with People.
“That’s another reason I don’t live in that state,” Wade said in response to a question about Florida politicians advocating for legislation that negatively impacts the LGBTQ+ community. “A lot of people don’t know that. I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.”
The 41-year-old former shooting guard has a 15-year-old daughter, Zaya, who came out as transgender in 2020. Wade and his wife, actor Gabrielle Union, are public supportive of Zaya and the transgender community.
Wade said that while Florida’s tax breaks are desirable and he loves Miami, the environment just isn’t right for his family right now. “My family wouldn’t be accepted or comfortable there, so that’s one of the reasons I don’t live there,” he told Nichols.
The past few months have passed Florida legislation which targets the LGBTQ+ community in several ways, including a law prohibiting people from using a bathroom other than their gender assigned at birth, a law prohibiting children from watching drag shows, and a law prohibiting classroom education about prohibits sexual orientation and gender identity in all classes.
Wade, who was initiated into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame earlier this month, sold his beachfront residency in Miami in 2021 and now lives with his family in Los Angeles County. He is currently one minority owner from Utah Jazz.
