The delegation of Guatemalan athletes that competes under the banner of Centro Caribe Sports won its first gold medal at the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador 2023 this Saturday by winning the 200-meter butterfly final.
It was thanks to a time of 1:58.41 that the 23-year-old Guatemalan finished on the top of the podium, accompanied by Yeziel Morales from Puerto Rico and the Mexican Hector Ruvalcaba.
This is the second medal that Centro Caribe Sports (Guatemala) has obtained so far in the sports fair, since the men’s table tennis team made up of Héctor Gatica, Diego de la Cruz, Heber Moscoso and Sergio Carrillo premiered the medal table on Friday with a bronze.
After celebrating its inauguration on Friday night, the action at the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games began “officially” for the more than 30 countries that showed up for the most important sports competition in the region.
The Guatemalan athletes, who will be competing under the flag and hymn of Centro Caribe Sports (CCS) due to the suspension of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG), began their activity in this sports fair.
Racquetball stomped on its debut at the Santo Domingo sub-venue, Edwin Galicia, Juan Salvatierra, Ana Gabriela Martínez, María Renee Rodríguez and Anna Aguilar achieved solid victories in the men’s singles, women’s, women’s doubles and mixed doubles respectively.
Lucía Cordero, along with Mabelyn Enriquez, Jenny Cux and Sergio Carrilo also did their thing in table tennis and are in the quarterfinals of the individual and women’s competition respectively.
Jorge Vega, the only representative in artistic gymnastics, closed his classification to the floor and vault finals.
Sophia Hernández began leading in modern pentathlon, the Guatemalan closed with 23 wins and 5 losses, adding 271 units in fencing. In third position is the also Guatemalan Sofia Cabrera.
