Dozens of fans of the Alianza team last night erected a memorial for the victims of a tragic oppression in a stadium in El Salvador where 12 people lost their lives.
The fans had placed a banner with the inscription “Rest in peace” on the wall of the stadium, wreaths of flowers and had lit 12 candles, representing the victims of the match between the local teams Alianza FAS.
Authorities said there were reports of a stampede among fans at the 35,000-seat Cuscatlan stadium in the capital San Salvador.
The match was suspended and emergency personnel evacuated the stadium as dozens of police and soldiers came to the aid of the medics.
Emergency services spokesman Carlos Fuentes said more than 500 people were treated for various injuries and 88 were hospitalized after the serious incident.
The tragic crackdown began after a stadium gate collapsed, causing people to be squeezed by the crowd, Fuentes said.
Fredy Alexander Ruiz, a 28-year-old survivor told of the trauma of seeing people trampled to the ground, dead and injured.
“I had five people on top of me choking me. Thank God I managed to grab the leg of a policeman, who pulled me and a friend out,” said Ruiz.
Yesterday dozens of fans of the Alianza team raised the memorial of the victims.
