Although it is currently unclear whether Vladimir Putin will attend the annual BRICS summit in South Africa in person, as there is a warrant for his arrest, Ukraine is confident that his participation will be limited to a video link.

The arrest warrant was issued by the International Criminal Court, which has jurisdiction in South Africa – meaning Putin would be arrested if he trespassed on the territory.

Although it remains unclear what exactly would happen if Putin traveled to South Africa, adviser to the Ukrainian president, Mykhailo Podolyak remains convinced that the Russian leader would be arrested.

“All of Putin’s ‘globalism’ and ‘international visits’ are now just video communications with the outside world from a location unspecified by investigators,” he said.

“Of course, you can get irritated and say that the ICC’s international arrest warrant is nothing… You can continue to call yourself a global player and a respected entity. And then it turns out that the Republic of South Africa (like every other signatory to the Rome Statute) is ready to execute the warrant and arrest you right at the BRICS summit. And that all “globalism” and “international visits” of Putin are now only video communications with the outside world from a place not determined by the investigators…” – writes Podolyak.
