A feud over a woman led to a man fatally shooting his colleague and then shooting himself in the head at a General Motors engine plant in Ohio, police said.

A third employee was injured Thursday night at the DMAX factory, possibly from a stray bullet when the man fired more than 12 rounds from a handgun, Moraine Police Sgt. Andrew Parish said this Friday during a press conference.

“This was a feud between the two men, apparently over a woman,” Parish said.

The woman the men argued about also works at the factory, but it was not clear if she was there at the time. She wasn’t hurt, Parish said.

Jeffrey James Allen III, 28, of Dayton, was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooter was alert and conscious when officers found him outside the factory, Parish said. He underwent surgery at a hospital and was admitted in critical but stable condition. No charges have been filed so far, but the investigation is ongoing. Police have not released his identity.

Officers and firefighters responded to an alert from an active shooter just after 9 p.m. Parish said multiple magazines of live ammunition were recovered. He said it is not yet clear whether the shooter reloaded his weapon, noting that there are semi-automatic pistols that can hold at least 12 rounds.

Authorities also searched the suspect’s home on Thursday evening, but Parish said he did not know what evidence, if any, had been recovered.

The DMAX plant in Moraine supplies diesel engines for pickup trucks, according to the General Motors website. It is a 60/40 joint venture between GM and Isuzu Motors that employs more than 800 people and has been building engines in Moraine since 1999.

“I’m shocked,” says Brian Smith, who has worked at the plant for about 10 years. He told WHIO-TV he got scared and ran after hearing “at least 10 to 12” shots.

Pat Morrissey, GM’s vice president of corporate communications, said production at the plant has been suspended until further notice. The plant’s director, Paul Tanis, expressed deep sorrow and condolences to all involved in a statement saying the company is cooperating with local authorities on the investigation.
