SEOUL – A post on a second-hand seller’s platform in South Korea has angered local netizens after it advertised a Five Guys burger set for sale for 100,000 won (S$104).
The first store of the popular American hamburger chain in South Korea officially opened its doors in the Gangnam district on Monday.
The post was uploaded to Danggeun Market Monday afternoon and read: “Two basic cheeseburgers and full size fries.” The set was bought at 2 p.m.
The price on the post was more than double the normal price of the set (40,700 won), drawing criticism from local netizens.
Multiple comments criticizing the seller were posted on major South Korean internet communities with hundreds of comments expressing shock at the seller’s brutality.
Some commentators claimed that selling hamburgers at a second-hand market violates local food hygiene laws.
However, takeaway food can be traded on the platform if it is still in its original packaging and untouched, a Danggeun Market official told local media.
Hundreds of people have been queuing daily in front of the Five Guys store in Seoul’s Gangnam-gu since its grand opening on Monday.
According to local media, about 400 people were already queuing for the planned opening time of 11 a.m. on Monday.
Reportedly, about 700 people visited the restaurant before noon that day, despite the rainy weather.
