The deportation of children and adolescents, mainly from the US and Mexico, decreased by 49% so far in 2023, according to figures from the National Institute of Migration (INM) reviewed this Monday by EFE.
INM data indicates that deportations of minors, many of them alone, to Honduras reached 5,077 from January to May 24, 2023.
This figure was 4,880 cases lower than the 9,957 deportations of children and adolescents registered by the INM in the same period of 2022.
In the case of the United States, returned minors dropped 48.6% in the current year, from 5,239 in 2022 to 2,691 today.
The Mexican immigration authorities deported 2,169 minors to Honduras between January and May 24, 2023, which represents a 50% reduction compared to the 4,337 in the same period of 2022.
Another 197 children and adolescents were deported from Central American countries, while 20 were repatriated from Europe and South America, according to the INM report.
81.7% of deported minors (4,150) returned to Honduras by air, 18.2% (924) by land and 0.01% (3) by sea.
Of the total number of deportees, 3,225 are boys (63.5%) and 1,852 are girls (36.5%), specify the figures from the National Institute of Migration.
Every year, thousands of hondurans they try emigrate illegally to the United States in search of better living conditions, including thousands of minors.
According to human rights organizations, children and adolescents emigrate with the idea of reuniting with relatives and because of the violence suffered by the country, which registers an average of between 10 and 15 deaths a day.
