Former Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy’s indictment is a ‘unhappy day,’ mayor says

The indictment of former Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy shortly after she resigned from her place is a “unhappy day for our group,” a Tennessee mayor says. 

Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp made the comment Thursday after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation introduced {that a} grand jury in his county returned a 17-count indictment containing felony and misdemeanor legal costs towards Murphy. 

“These of us who’ve been entrusted to serve the general public have a accountability to maintain that belief,” Wamp wrote on X. “The Chattanooga Police Division is a revered legislation enforcement company and I’m assured it can thrive once more beneath new management.”

Murphy, who was sworn in as police chief in April 2022 earlier than resigning Wednesday, was charged with “one rely of Unlawful Voter Registration, one rely of False Entries on Official Registration or Election Paperwork, three counts of False Entries in Governmental Information, three counts of Forgery, three counts of Perjury, and 6 counts of Official Misconduct,” the TBI added. 

The company says Murphy surrendered Thursday morning at Hamilton County Jail earlier than being booked and launched after posting a $19,000 bond.

Chattanooga Mayor Tim Kelly stated Wednesday that he had “accepted the resignation of Chattanooga Police Chief Celeste Murphy, efficient instantly,” in keeping with WZTV.
